Over the years, the publication had grown a substantial archive of editorial content, consisting of years of journalism, match coverage, player profiles, and community-based sports writing, which was the main asset of the platform.
That site’s content library was suddenly lost due to a mistake, and it was no longer available. It was a technical nuisance — but, for a digital publication, whose value proposition is largely based on its editorial archive and its ability to provide content to its dedicated, loyal audiences, it was an existential threat to business. All the years of editorial effort would be lost, there would be no platform to access, and the reputation of the brand as a trusted sports journalism destination would be severely compromised if they were not able to intervene quickly.
It was a crisis that needed fast, intelligent responses on two parallel tracks: to recover as much content as possible from web archive sources, and to rebuild as a modern, sustainable, WordPress-based platform that could host the recovered content, sustain future publishing, and provide reliable service for the women’s football fan community into the future.
The volume of recovery work was huge; around 300 articles were to be retrieved, structured, and prepared for the migration from web archive sources within a limited time period. Executing a Rapid, Structured Emergency Recovery and Platform Migration with Large-Scale Content Archival
AddWeb Solution was deployed to meet the emergency, a recovery plan with a clear, structured approach was agreed, it was divided into two phases: the first – a 40-hour approved engagement – involved platform set-up, archival and core migration; and the second – a task phase 30th – 1st May – involved the large-scale retrieval and incorporation of some 300 archived articles.
The first task was to get the recovered content onto Bricks Builder’s new Platform built with WordPress, and to make it a clean, modern platform that will be able to host the work of Beyond The Pitch’s digital journalism operation, for the foreseeable future at least. The platform architecture was designed from the outset with content management, search engine optimization, newsletter integration, and performance optimization in mind: As the content was recovered, its availability was not to be pushed into a makeshift site and environment but into a well-designed and production-ready platform.
The original content of the website was systematically sourced from the web archive to recover as much as possible. Each recovered content piece was evaluated, organized, and consistently formatted before being copied/transferred into the new WordPress-based platform, leaving the archive published in an editorial-quality and structurally consistent format, as opposed to a data-dump format.
The next task phase (30th April to 1st May) focused 100% on recovering the approximately 300 articles from the archive and uploading them to the new platform, ensuring the complete editorial back catalogue was recovered, suitably formatted, and published on the new platform. This was the most time-consuming and operationally complex part of the engagement, as it involved systematic and methodical work under time constraints and a large amount of content in the archives.
The implementation of Yoast SEO throughout the platform was done to make sure that all of the recovered content was correctly linked to the search engine, especially for a publication that depends on organic visibility to reach an audience of women’s football fans. Beyond The Pitch integrated Omnisend for a newsletter so that they can reignite their subscriber base and keep their audience engaged through a website deletion. The platform underwent a basic performance optimisation, ensuring reliable and fast delivery of content to returning and new readers.
