The Business Needs
Understanding the Challenge of Legacy Platform Limitations
Florian Rotermund’s online custom apparel business was currently operating with PrestaShop 1.6, which is an old platform that no longer receives security patches and modern features. The current T-shirt configurator module, which was originally designed for this older version, did not conform to the current web standards and could not be customized to meet modern requirements, posing considerable security threats.
The antiquated architecture was restricting the development of the business. Increasingly, customers demanded more and more rich interactive product customization experiences both on the mobile and desktop platforms. The old system was unable to accommodate the multi-sided design editing, real-time pricing calculations, or layered design features that are required by the modern custom apparel customers.
It was necessary to completely migrate the platform to PrestaShop 9 not only to update the technology base but also to develop the custom T-shirt configurator again with the latest PrestaShop 9 platform, making sure it is fully compatible and can also scale and provide the customer experience significantly better.

Our Approach
Building a modern, scalable custom apparel configurator
Instead of trying to patch or upgrade the current configurator, we chose to go with a full rebuild strategy because the updated PrestaShop 9 has a fundamentally different architecture, and the new purpose-built one was needed. The project started by ensuring the module structure of PrestaShop 1.6 was analyzed and the current configurator functionality analyzed to make sure no features would be lost during the migration.
The key focus of our development approach was to be deeply integrated with the native systems of PrestaShop 9 such as product management, cart, checkout and order flow products so that the configurator felt a native PrestaShop feature rather than an add-on solution. We also made use of the modern and clean code of PrestaShop 9 that would assist in long-term improvements through its modern module architecture.
The user experience and performance were prioritized by the frontend of the configurator. Live communications, interactivity of the canvas, and transition effects were optimized to perform perfectly across devices. Extended cross-browser testing made all users have the same experience. The whole construction was designed in a way that it would be easily scalable, allowing the easy addition of new types of products, design layers, and customization options in subsequent stages.
